About SeaView

 SeaView Goals

nsf_logoSeaView is an NSF-funded EarthCube Integrative Activity Project working with existing data repositories to make oceanographic data more Findable, Accessible, and Interoperable. SeaView has 3 complementary goals:

  • Supporting Scientists. Reformatting data for scientist’s tool of choice can be a barrier and a time sink. Existing ocean data repositories provide data in different format options, such that bringing data together from multiple repositories into a single analysis or visualization environment requires reformatting. Furthermore, finding data of interest across multiple repositories can be challenging or time consuming, particularly when the data of interest is not easily defined by the search facets commonly supported by data portals. SeaView is working with five oceanographic data repositories on a lightweight approach to publish content in common data formats, focusing on thematic collections (see below).
  • Strengthening Repositories. Integrating data from multiple repositories for science use identifies pain points that inform core repository improvements. These improvements benefit users well beyond SeaView. SeaView is helping the ocean data repositories align their data and processes and make their ocean data more integrable and accessible overall.
  • Informing EarthCube. SeaView’s experience as a de-facto Integration and Interoperability Demo can inform the overall EarthCube architecture and design effort. Some experience gained to date:

SeaView Thematic Data Collections

The primary focus of SeaView is facilitating the production of select, end-user-requested, formats by the partner data repositories. These will be accessible through each repository’s usual search and access method. However, this work will be incremental. SeaView is rolling its data out in thematic “data packages,” intended to be useful to particular research communities, and to provide SeaView with interim feedback to improve its operations. These distributed data will be accessible through this SeaView data access page.
